4 Trending Environmentally-Friendly Hairstyles

Updated: Oct 26, 2021

Eco-friendly. Going green. Carbon footprint. Environment-friendly. These have become buzzwords in many aspects of life—including what you eat, what you buy, how you decorate your living space, and even what you wear. It’s a great trend! Doing your bit to protect the environment and save the planet is a worthwhile goal. Why not add eco-friendly hairstyles to your efforts?

Eco-Friendly Hair Salons

Yes, you read that right. Eco-friendly salons are becoming increasingly popular as they promote and execute eco-friendly hairstyles and green, industry-specific practices. What is an eco-friendly hairstyle? Well, put simply, these are hairstyles that are designed not to increase your all-important carbon footprint.

Hair is styled using no heat and with little to no hair products. If hair products are used, they are environmentally friendly ones such as Davines products. Hairstylists embrace the client’s natural hair texture and work with it, or they use products that are organic and made with sustainable ingredients.

Trending Environmentally-Friendly Hairstyles

Here are some environmentally-friendly hairstyles that are popular and easy-to-achieve at home. For more ideas, visit an eco-friendly hair salon or speak to a hairstylist dedicated to helping the environment.

1. Braids and Fishtails

You can braid your hair without using heat, and you need little to no product to achieve a gorgeous look.

  • Part your hair in the middle, separating into two sections on the left and the right.

  • If your hair is very fine, you can use an eco-friendly texturizing spray.

  • Start a normal 3-strand braid near your forehead, and take more hair into each strand every time you pull it into the middle.

  • Braid until you’re within an inch or two of the bottom of your hair, then secure with an elastic.

Here’s how to achieve the perfect fishtail look with no products or heat!

Tie your hair back into a low ponytail.

  • Divide your ponytail into two equal-sized sections.

  • Take a small section of hair from the outside of the left ponytail. Pull it across the top of the left ponytail over to the right ponytail.

  • Next, take a similar-sized section of hair from the outside of the right ponytail and do the same: pull it across the top of the right ponytail over to the left ponytail.

  • Repeat this pattern until you’re within an inch or two of the bottom of your hair and secure the end with an elastic. Take out the elastic you used to make your initial low ponytail.

2. Slicked Ponytails or Buns

Whether you have straight hair or curls, this look never goes out of style, and, you guessed it, it doesn’t need a ton of products or styling. The look is all about being stiff at the roots and letting the natural texture of your hair take over at the ends.

To to achieve the slick look on the top of your head, you can do one of the following:

  • Don’t wash your hair daily so that your roots get naturally oily (this reduces your water consumption, so it’s a win-win situation!).

  • Brush your hair back, smooth the sides with environmentally friendly gel or other product, and secure the ponytail or bun with an elastic.

  • For an extra finished look, wrap a small section of hair around the elastic and insert a bobby pin to hold it in place.

3. Natural Textures

Often, we are so consumed by runway trends and magazine looks, that we are quick to follow what’s “in” without questioning whether it really suits us or not! However, more often than not, our natural waves and curls offer a fresh look, and actually do suit us better. Why not embrace the natural texture of your hair? You’ll likely need a bit of product to finish off your curly or wavy look, so opt for a styling mousse, gel, or texture spray that is gentle on your hair and the environment.

If you have naturally straight hair and want a bit of a wave, you have more options than a curling iron and loads of products. Try putting your hair in braids and leaving them in for a day or more. Undo the braids and let the waves free. Natural. Simple. 100% eco-friendly.

4. Accessories

Add drama and style to your natural hair or any other eco-friendly hairstyle with the use of accessories like hair clips, hair scarves, scrunchies, and headbands. Opt for accessories made from bamboo or recycled materials to further decrease your environmental impact.

Adopting a greener lifestyle doesn’t limit your hair options! It’s easy to change up your go-to hairstyles and still look fabulous everyday without the use of chemicals or products or hair gadgets.
